Hello! Jim ...

Below are the years of the three major mine disasters in Springhill. Note the disasters of 1891 and 1956 were caused by "explosions".

The first major mining disaster occurred on February 21, 1891 in what was called the East Slope. In this "explosion" 125 men and boys lost their lives, as well as 17 horses.

The second major mine disaster occurred on November 1, 1956 in No. 4 Mine. This "explosion" claimed the lives of 39 men.

The third and last major mine disaster (the mines closed immediately afterwards) occurred on October 23, 1958 in No. 2 Mine. This disaster came in the form of a "bump" and caused the deaths of 75 miners.

Regards!
