Happy Bandy Day 2008, everyone! As promised, the new edition of This One's On Me was released today. Sadly, our annual Bandy Day musical request didn't appear on the CBC this year for some reason, but at least the book is out.

Dont forget,  BANDY DAY -- Bandy's birthday -- July 14th is almost upon us again. For those in range of the CBC (or a computer for the online stream http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/mediaPlayer.html? ), tune into "Here's to You" on Thursday morning, the 12th, to hear a Bandy Day request song, 9 am on Radio Two.
(truncated) Bandy's commanders insisted that parachuting was impractical.
I'm pretty sure that that was because it was common knowledge: at speeds above 60 mph your bones explode.

Interesting Bandy Day trivia: Georgia Broadwick, aka "Tiny" Broadwick, was born the same year as Bandy. She was the first woman to parachute from an aeroplane (June 21, 1913), and was used by Bandy in It's Me Again as an argument in favour of issuing parachutes to pilots (Bandy's commanders insisted that parachuting was impractical).

July 14... I will be basking in the midnight sun here in Yellowknife, re-re-reading one of the Bandybooks (cf. Bandycraft) for the umpteenth time, and waiting impatiently for the next volume to be rereleased. I came upon BW rather late in life (his and mine) but was an immediate convert.

Bandy Turns 111

As some of you may know, this July 14th will be Bart Bandy's eleventy-first birthday (he was born in 1893). As Tolkien has rightly noted, this is "a rather curious number and a very respectable age for a hobbit," and I'm sure the same applies to horse-faced aviators. It is therefore a day deserving of some celebration, or misadventure.

What will you be doing this July 14th?

Bandy's birthday -- July 14th -- is the ideal day to celebrate Bandyness in all its forms: stealing pianos, upsetting your superiors, having a wild binge, giving a friend a Bandy book, or just swanking about in a uniform that makes you resemble a Bolivian admiral. However you choose to mark Bandy Day, remember to raise a glass to Donald Jack too.
