Hello folks in Springhill. I am looking for information on several families from the Springhill and surrounding areas. Are there any relatives of the Margaret (Rector) Spence/Whitewood, Joseph Spence, Thomas McAloney
willing to share family history ??? What can you tell me about the Mine Disaster of 1956 and Ernel Spence?

Here is a bit of information on the 1956 mine disaster which may be of interest.

SPRINGHILL MINE DISASTER 1956
A major mine disaster occurred on November 1, 1956 in No. 4 Mine. This “explosion” claimed the lives of 39 men.
Mysteriously, six cars, loaded with coal, break loose on their climb to the surface and hurtle downhill backward, raising a blizzard of coal dust. They slice through an electric cable and the arc from the cable ignites the dust. Thirty miles away, people feel the explosion. The blast kills some miners, traps others, spreads deadly methane gas among still others.
Miraculously, 88 men were rescued.
The gas was so dangerous that the company sealed up the mine, and with it, the bodies of 26 men. Eleven weeks after the explosion, miners brought out the last of their dead friends.
