Hi,
I recently visited Springhill where my father and his family once lived in the late 1890's early 1900's. I had the most wonderful trip and bought 2 books about the history of Springhill. I would like to follow up on a couple of things if I may. One would be old newspapers in the time period that my family would of lived there. Where would copies of old newspapers be kept at this point? Also besides the pictures that I saw in the 2 books on Springhill that I bought at the library , is there any other place where old photos of Springhill would be kept. Also were directories, business and resident directories kept at all during the early 1900's??

Hi! Audrie ...

You said: (1)Where would copies of old newspapers be kept at this point?

The very earliest extant newspaper of Springhill is 1896 and only a very few are available in the early 1900's. However, these are available on microfilm at the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax. The Springhill Heritage Group has some copies but its ability to do research on them is limited. The Group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month excluding July and August.

(2)Also besides ... is there any other place where old photos of Springhill would be kept.

The same applies here as for the newspapers except copies are not in the Archives.

(3) Also were directories, business and resident directories kept at all during the early 1900's??

Unfortunately all the civic and school records for the town were destroyed in the Main Street fire of 1975, which is a main reason for the formation of the SHG.

If you have specific enquiries we would pleased to try and find answers for you.

Regards!
