LOWDEN

Seeking information about Lowden family, living in Springhill in 1950s.
William Lowden, born 1893 Ryhope, Co. Durham, England.  He and his wife Louisa (nee Hoggett) arrived in Nova Scotia in 1924 with sons William and Kenneth.  Subsequently 2 more sons were born.
As William Lowden was from a mining community in England, he was possibly employed as a miner in Springhill.

Dear Val,
How kind of you to check out the Lowdens for me and to reply so promptly.  You have not only given me new information, but also of course new leads to pursue. I knew William and Louisa had 4 sons, but only the names of the 2 eldest, William and Kenneth.  Now I can investigate Ronald.
Do you have any personal connection to the Lowdens?  Louisa was my great aunt, one of a family of 13 Hoggett children, most of whom remained in Yorkshire, though another (Priscilla) emigrated, in her case to Brazil.
If you should, as you suggest, come across any more information about the family, I would be most grateful, but I don't wish to put you to any trouble.
Many thanks,
Janet Woodward

Hello again

I checked the list of names of miners killed in the mines and didn't come up with any Lowden's.

I checked with the Nova Scotia Historical site and did come up with some information.
www.novascotiagenealogy.com

Muroye Alaine Louden (Notice the spelling)
death certificate on line
Reg. year 1947 book 1947 page 6227
Her death was from post partum hemmorage, death associated with pregnancy.
It lists her parents names and also a sister as well as husband.
I checked
www.canada411.ca/
for addresses of Lowdens/Loudens living in Nova Scotia and came up with 2 Ronald Lowdens both living in the Halifax/Dartmouth area of Nova Scotia as well as these surnames in different parts of the province.
The name Louden/Lowden isn't common in Nova Scotia so that may make your search easier. I would be tempted to contact the Ronalds by mail for information.
After the mines closed in Springhill, many families moved away from the area. Louisa died in Dartmouth according to the Moss Diaries so it is possible she was living with one of her sons (Ronald) in Dartmouth.

I am not related in anyway and don't remember any Lowden's when I was in school in the 60's. Good luck with your search.
If I find anything else I will let you know.
Val

Hi!
Many thanks for all your latest information, which certainly gives me more lines to pursue, though we're about to go away for 2 or 3 weeks, so I'll have to put my research on hold for the time being.  It's all very time-consuming, as I'm sure you know all too well, which is all the more reason to thnak you for being so helpful.
All the best!
Janet

Janet, I saw your post today while searching the internet for a good friend of mine Ron Lowden...Unfortunately, Ron passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer.  If you check the Chronicleherald site or newspaper you should find his obit.  He was a super guy, who loved life till the end.  His wife Betty, passed just three months ago.

Hope you find this useful

Just reading the info on your family from Springhill, Nova Scotia.  I grew up as a neighbor of the Lowden family.  I just realized they were from the same town in England as my mother was from.  I new about the sons but didn't know them - difference in ages.  My older siblings would know them.  If I get any info.  I will send it to you.

Hello! Jean .....

I was interested in your message saying you were a neighbor of the Lowden's.
I was a classmate of Kenneth at the Junction Road school. I lived on Queen Street and am wondering if I might know your family?

Hi - I'm searching on behalf of my Dad, Keith Evans, for a Gerry Lowden.  They were good friends and diving buddies in 60's and 70's. Could that be the Trail BC son?
