Roney/Rooney

Hello --- I am looking for any information on my grandmother's family.  Her maiden name was Effie Roney.  She was from a large family--siblings by the names of Rupert, Lyle, Lusby, Lottie, James that I know of.  I know Lottie married a fellow named George Hopkins and they never had children.   Some of the family's name evolved into Rooney apparently.   Grandma was a teacher as was Lottie.  Grandma later moved to Saskatchewan to teach (a broken love affair?)and married my grandfather, George Lomas.   Grandma played hockey and at one time we had a picture of her and her team ---it appears they won a trophy ---long skirts they wore !!  I would dearly love a JPEG of that if it could be found.   Much appreciate any help.

The picture is in the book
Springhill, Our Goodly Heritage, page 313, published by the Springhill Heritage Group.Bertha J. Campbell, et. al. 1989
The picture is extremely small so I don't think it would copy well. I will see what else I can find.

If you jump to the Springhill Heritage Group, you can order the book under our publications. It isn't very expensive and has a lot of information about Springhill and it's history and people.

If you go to
www,novascotiagenealogy.com
you will find a lot of BMD's for Roney/Rooney
That will help you piece together who married who, etc. On this site it has that George Hopkins married Lottie.
There are quite a few Roney/Rooney's in the Moss Diaries as well but from the information that you gave, I'm not sure which ones would be your family. Do you have Effie's parent's names as that would narrow down the search? Effie is probably a nickname.
You can also check the census information at
www.automatedgenealogy.com
and
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
The archives at Collections Canada have lots of other information as well including the attestation papers for soldiers of the First World War.

Let me know if I can provide any other info and if you want the info from the Moss diaries.

census on the automated genealogy site

both 1901 and 1911 have family as Roney

1901 family under Cumberland, household 148
head of family is Charles Roney
Effie J. b. 1884

1911 family under Charles

another family under James, head
wife  Mary both born 1877
daughter, Effie, b. 1905
household 154

From the above, it is likely that you will come across 2 by the name of Effie in your search. You can click on the split screen at the top of the page and it will bring up the original documents which contain more information than the transcribed records. sometimes it takes a few seconds for the originals to come up for view so be patient.

Off to lunch now, Good luck with your search.
