Title: The Other Bartholomew Bandy, in Rover and Wizard
Post by Forum Administrator on 22. Sep 2005 at 14:11

Does anyone remember reading "THE WORLD’S SPELLING CHAMPION" in the British comic book The Rover and Wizard? I recently came across a transcript of an issue of the comic from 1968, and lo there was Bartholomew Bandy, but not the air ace - the champion speller:

I wonder if the name is a coincidence, or if there's some connection between the author of the comic and the pre-existing Bandy novel.

Sorry I can only add to the mystery! In Rover or Wizard, some 10 years earlier, ther was a story of a WW1 flying ace, speciality a Mauser pistol with a wooden stock - and a dead shot. I recall thes hero meeting up with a Bart Bandy in the narrative. This Bandy in the tale was a pilot. Time has erased the rest of the saga and I too wondered if there was a connection.

Dave,

Thanks - it would be interesting to track down some more information about that.

By the way, I don't suppose you're related to the infamous John Oakley who is Bandy's nemesis, or one of them, in Stalin Versus Me? (Just kidding!).

I am new to the site, so i hope I am conforming with your protocol. I should explain that the death of Peter Benchley got me browsing - Rover or Wizard featured a story about a persistent, vindictive yet small-minded great white shark that obsessively pursued a hapless family. written about '62-4 I guess. That reminded me of the Bandy appearance in the same comic, almost certainly about those dates. I was extemely surprised to see a question of the same ilk! I have no idea where you can find browsable back issues, and I can't remember whether it was in Rover or Wizard. Those comics did not acknowledge authors names, my best guess is that Mr Jack submitted stories for publication (successfully) while working up to his magnus opus. If my memory releases anything new, I'll get back to the forum.   .......and thanks for rekindling my enjoyment of the Bandy Papers!! I need to track down a couple I haven't read.

A PS - a flash of dust from my brain answered my own question!! I offer my apologies for the rubbish I keep in my head! The WW1 ace was Capt. AR "Ruthless" Ruff, and a web search shows a story featuring this hero running from Nov - Feb 1963-4. By this time the comic was 'Rover and Wizard'. The separate comics had amalgamated very recently. I can't find any contents listing for the earlier magazines, so there may be an even earlier appearance of Bart Bandy! Coincidentally, the synopsis shown on the site of Rover and Wizard titles has got a Canadian connection. I await any further info!!
Regards
Dave

Perhaps some reader and collector of Rover and/or Wizard can illuminate us about this other Bandy's career?
