Title: E-books
Post by Forum Administrator on 21. Oct 2005 at 20:56

Do any Bandy fans buy and read e-books? Currently there aren't any Donald Jack books available in electronic formats, but would this be something that interests you, or do you prefer to read books the old fashioned way, on paper?

Of course, I prefer a conventional paper book. You can't get comfortable in bed reading from a screen! But postage to Uruguay, where I live, is expensive, and what's worse, the Uruguayan post office is very unreliable. Local stores stock few, if any, titles in English. So I sit up at a desk to read e-books.

We're working on making some of the Bandy series available as e-books, so my question is: what format do you use for e-books? Do you prefer to read on your computer, or on a stand-alone device like the Sony Reader or Kindle, or some other portable machine like an iPhone?

I'm literally dying to buy the Bandy Papers in ebook format.  I have ALS and have lost most of the use of my hands - so ebooks are my only option.

As to format, I frankly believe that the only reason people are buying Kindles is that they have never tried the ebook apps for the iphone and ipod touch (except for textbook reading).

Once more people buy iphones, I think the Kindle will go the way of Beta.

You may want to sell the ebooks through ereader.com.  They have a good app for the iphone and other PDAs (Palm, Blackberry etc.)

Three of the Bandy books have just become available as e-books through Shortcovers.com [*update: Shortcovers has been renamed Kobo, so the links below have been changed to the new site.]

It's Me Again (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=lykVAVEVOY0&subid=&offerid=258189.1&type=10&tmpid=9388&RD_PARM1=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kobobooks.com%2Febook%2FIts-Me-Again%2Fbook-R_0Eev77gEWAIgkqkvfy8Q%2Fpage1.html)

This One's On Me (http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/This-Ones-On-Me/book-IdbRsOiXTk-IKSBwnz-cYg/page1.html)

Me Bandy, You Cissie (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=lykVAVEVOY0&subid=&offerid=258189.1&type=10&tmpid=9388&RD_PARM1=http%3A//www.kobobooks.com/ebook/Me-Bandy-You-Cissie/book-P1lhQQobtk65FOTSoeLKPQ/page1.html)

Their system works with the Kobo reader, a number of mobile and desktop machines, Sony Reader, and other ePub compatible e-book readers.

Amazing - bought all three.  Reasonably priced  too.

Any idea of a timeline for the release of 3 Cheers 4 Me and That's Me in the Middle?

We're not sure of the publication date yet for the Three Cheers for Me e-book, but it's one of the next projects we'll be working on (there's also a new trade paperback edition of Me Too to bring out, so that's in the works too).

Any update on the status of ebook versions of the remainder of the Bandy papers?

Thanks

Sorry for the delay - we'll be getting seriously to work converting some of our back list of books to e-books this summer, so over the next few months there should be some more volumes available in epub format.

We've finished the final editing an preparation for the e-book of

Three Cheers for Me: The Journals of Bartholomew Bandy, R.F.C.
ISBN: 9780986497445

We're starting with the original Three Cheers for Me, the 1962 stand-alone version which won the 1963 Leacock Medal. It's a hard-to-find volume these days, most of the Three Cheers for Me copies around being the revised version from the 70s, when Jack rewrote Three Cheers for Me to make it the start of a series. We'll be working on the revised edition next, to be followed by That's Me in the Middle, but we though fans might like to start with an e-book of the original. We'll post links here once the e-book is available at retailers in a week or two.

http://sybertooth.ca/publishing/threecheers-r.jpgThe ePub e-book of the revised & expanded Three Cheers for Me (the 1973 version that starts the series, as opposed to the stand-alone 1962 version) is with the distributors, so it should start to appear at on-line retailers in a week or so. Further updates here as it becomes available for sale.

UPDATE:

The first retailer to offer it is... Kobo Books:

New editions sometimes correct typos (hopefully without creating new ones), and in the case of the e-book of Me So Far, one was fixed that had been in every previous edition since the first. See if you can spot the passage when reading the e-book - it has to do with a difference between British and Canadian English when using the words raise & rise.

There was a bit of trouble with This One's On Me not appearing in the Kobo catalogue in some web browsers, but I think that's fixed now:
