Title: Halverson geneology
Post by terryh on 03. May 2006 at 16:01

Hi folks:
I am new to this forum, but not to Springhill. My family is from there and I was born there. Far too many years ago now it seems. hehehe. My name is Terry Halverson and I am trying to trace back past my father to find out the geneology of our family. His father's name was Robert Halverson and he came over on a ship sometime just before the 1st world war. thats all the info I have. Is there a way I can access the archives or records of Springhill town hall or the Sprinhill Record newspaper to find out when he died or was married, or where he came from? I have been trying all the geneology sites on the web for afew years now, but I am not even sure what country he came from. Norway I think. No one alive in my family has any knowledge of him at all. But not knowing where he lived there or when he left for canada, the task is all but impossible. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

http://immigrantships.net/index2.html

There are 8 volumes of ships lists to look through here.

Halverson was spelled Halvorsen

You hadn't put any dates in your post.  It would be easier if we had dates for your father and your grandfather.  I did not find a Robert in the 1901  or 1911 Candian census.

Hi all:
Many thanks to anyone who replied and helped me with information. Much appreciated. I also had some help from the folks at Geneology.com and so far I have the following info, mostly from the Moss diary I think. My grandfather's name was Robert Halverson (Halvorsen), born Sept 16, 1884 in Hamburg, Germany. Immigrated to Canada 1913. Died March 29, 1955. He is buried in Springhill. Now I have to get to some web pages for Germany births in Hamburg. Should be a daunting task. I think my father changed the spelling of his name, or his brother Art did, as they are different. Again, thanks a lot and I will be in touch.
