Title: Looking For Info on The Henwood Family
Post by Alpine_7 on 01. Apr 2007 at 19:55

I'm looking for information on the Henwood family and the connection to natives. My grandfather used to say that The  Henwoods were "Indians" and I would like to know if this is true and if I can use this to get my native status if possible I would greatly appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction please contact me.

No disrespect to your grandfather but Henwood is an English name from England.

Here is a place to start your search,

I have always known that the Henwood name is English. However that doesn't mean there is not natives that have married into the family. My grandfather had always said there was native blood in the family. I know he is right because he knew what he was talking about. This has been passed down for along time that I know of.

Elijah Henwood married a half breed Elizabeth Brown in the 1700's.  Church records indicate Elizabeth and an infant as half breeds.  Martha Henwood who married a West then married Rufus Henwood is listed as a red skin on the 1901 or 1911 Canadian Census.  Several of us have our Metis cards but we do not, and rightly so, do not qualify for full Indian status.
