Title: Donald L Jack - Troon
Post by colin on 09. Nov 2009 at 15:20

Good evening.  I have what may seem to be an obscure question.
However, as a Scot, I have been intrigued by reading the statement in the notes of all Sybertooth Bandy Volumes 'about the author', that Donald was briefly evicted from Marr College after "writing an injudicious letter to the editor".  I would really love to know what this is about.  It seems to hint at the very core of a young Donald's respect (?) of & to authority.  (I have looked at the current Marr College webpage - and there does not seem to be any reference to DLJ, - who surely should be acknowldged as one of their greatest former pupils.......!! cub

Colin - I don't have too much more information about the incident, except that Jack is supposed to have written to the Glasgow Herald and that Marr College was somehow connected with his letter. Whether this means he wrote on paper with the school letterhead, or signed it "Donald Jack, Marr College", or what have you, I don't know exactly.

If anyone cares to do more research, it would certainly be interesting to read the letter. It probably wouldn't be difficult to find an archive with the Glasgow Herald; the trick would be finding out the date of the letter to get the right issue of the paper. The easiest way might be to find out from Marr College the date of the incident, from Jack's school records, but they may not give out such information.

Thank you again for the prompt response.  I am now even more intrigued to follow this up.  As a Glaswegian, I am a daily reader of 'The Herald', as it is now titled, so it is somewhat close to home, and I will endeavour to research some archives - I think I know where to start.......

kind regards, cub

I may be able to give you an approximate date of the letter Don wrote to the Glasgow Herald.  Email if interested.

Thanks to Colin's exceptional research efforts, Donald Jack's letter has been located in the Glasgow Herald, Tuesday December 2nd 1941 issue. A copy of his letter is posted here:

along with the letter by his uncle, WD Lamont, which started the discussion:

Unfortunately, the intervening letter, by a Mr Kirk, to which Donald Jack was directly replying, could not be located.

Correction: Colin has also located the letter by William K Kirk, a copy of which can be found here:
