Title: Cooper Genealogy
Post by cooper on 17. Feb 2010 at 21:29

Hi All,
Looking for information on John Cooper, he was cashier at the Springhill Mine from 1873 to his death in 1881.

Also looking for information on Ross Henry Cooper, he was clerk at the Springhill Mining Co., became cashier after his brother John's death. Was councillor and was mayor of Springhill around 1889. He lived on McFarlane and past away in 1931.

Other Coopers also worked at the mine. Frederik Cooper and another John Cooper.

Any information is welcome, as well as stories about living in Springhill in the late 1800's.

Thanks.

Frans Compeer and Betty Compeer (Cooper)

On this site that you just posted on go to the top of the page.
click on Jump to the Springhill Heritage Group, this will bring up another page - click on current projects.
Under the Heritage corner - click here, brings up different articles and stories by Pat Crowe.
The 1893 Annual Report has info on RH Cooper and the years he was mayor. there is also lots of information in the articles that may interst you.

You can check BMD's at
www.novascotiagenealogy.com

I will check some other sites and post what I find.

In the book Springhill, Our goodly Heritage, there is a picture of R. H. Cooper house at 21 McFarlane St.

It appears that the Cooper's came from Scotland and settled in the Pugwash area. I found quite a few Cooper's on the Nova Scotia Genealogy site that are all related to eash other. On the site that I gave you, you can narrow your search to Cumberland County and that will help in the search process.

other sites to search
automatedgenealogy.com

this site gives you free access to the 1901 and 1911 Canada Census and will also let you view the original documents. It takes a little getting used to but narrow your search to province, then county, put in the surname and search that way. It will bring up transcribed records by family. At the top of the page you can click on split view and that will bring up the original documents. this will give you Husband, wife, sons and daughters, and others living in the household as well as year or birth, immigration, religion, etc. sometimes occupations. Many men associated with the mines were on strike in 1911 and there are references to that as well. It's a great site and very user friendly.

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
this will give you access to lots of records including census and First World War attestation papers, also passenger lists and immigration documents. Worth looking at.

According to the 1881 Canada Census on the Collections Canada site, it appears that Ross Cooper and family are in Maccan, NS.

Let us know if we are giving you the type of information that you are interested in.

Hi Val,

Thanks for the suggestions.

We have a lot of genealogical information on the Cooper family, starting with their arrival in Nova Scotia.

I can forward you a copy.

Some of the things that are giving me trouble are:
John Cooper Son of Ross Henry Cooper of Aberdeen Scotland, born in Shiminecas in 1837, died in 1881. John married Matilda Crane Bent in 1864. He was cashier at the mines in Springhill at the time of his death.
He was involved in settling the estate of another John Cooper, farmer of Amherst around 1876. I believe the farmer's wife's name is Sussanah.
Who is the John Cooper, farmer of Amherst. We think he is the uncle of John, but have not found a record.
Incidentally, the probate records of both John Coopers are intermingled in the registry office in the same file.

The there is William Cooper another son of Ross Henry Cooper of Aberdeen. He was born in 1846 and died in 1868 in Pugwash of consumption.

There was another William Cooper in Pugwash, a merchant who died around 1856 and left a widow Catherine. Was this William related to Ross Henry??

It also appears that the records of both Williams' are intermingled in the registry office.

So what is the story with bothe Johns and Williams?

In addition we are looking for general stories on how life was in Pugwash and in Springhill in the early mining days.

John Cooper, the cashier at the mine had an office at mine, but appears to have been living in Maccan after leaving Pugwash.
When were the houses build on McFarlane in Springhill, that were lived in by John's widow Matilda Crane Bent, and Ross Henry with wife Articia?

John's brother Ross Henry as well as his sister lived with them for some time, Ross Henry untill his marriage, Amelia for as long as he lived.

Thanks.

Frans

I went back to www.novascotiagenealogy.com and went through all the BMD's for Cooper to see if I had missed something. there is a gap in registrations between 1877 and the early 1900's with nothing listed.

I also went to www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
At this site you can access information for the 1881 census and also the 1891 census. The 1881 census is transcribed but you can actually view the original documents for the 1891 census. I also checked the 1901 and 1911 census through automated genealogy as it is also a free site.
The census of 1881 and 1891 both list Cathrine (Catherine) Cooper, age 60 and 68, place of birth Nova Scotia, Religion - church of Scotland, Cumberland (22) Pugwash
She may be buried in Pugwash so it is worth following that up in case you find something else of interest.
The census of 1881 has Susanna Cooper, age 85, Place of birth NS, Religion - Methodist. Cumberland (22) Amherst Shore (B) She doesn't show up in 1901.
The 1891 Census has a John Cooper, age 32, single in Springhill that I can't seem to connect to any of the others. I may have missed something.
I checked the 1901 Census and all of these Cooper's are listed on the same page so they are living on the same street.

Had to start a new post.
1911 Census
All of the families listed on the 1901 census are on this census on the same page on McFarlane St so they were probably on McFarlane St. in 1901 as well. I checked the family names on the pages and they all lived on McFarlane. I was born in Springhill and lived on McFarlane St.

Household 82
Ross H Cooper, age 60
Articia, wife
Annie, daughter
Minnie, sister

Household 84

Matilda is also listed on the 1881 and 1891 census

Household 16
Carl Cooper, b. 1870

Robert, son, b. 1895, mines

From what I can find on him, he appears to be from the Tatamagouche area and his family may have been farmers but it isn't that far from Pugwash so there could be a connection.

The following are deaths that I found at nova scotia genealogy just in case you don't have them. the information is on the death certificates.

In your post you mentioned that you had information from the time the Cooper's arrived in Nova Scotia. do you know the year and port they arrived in. It is entirely possible that the Coopers from Pugwash, Oxford, Wentworth and Tatamagouche are all related as it forms a loop for traveling. Earliest generations would settle near the shore and the next generation tended to move inland a bit farther. That was the pattern followed by Crowe's who came in 1761 and the Blenkhorn's in 1774. Also if you have any details from Scotland, the best place to access information is Scotlands People. It is a pay site but has great information. The records of Scotland are really quite good and contain lots of info.

The Susanna Cooper living in Amherst Shore is not that far from Pugwash so it is entirely possible her John, Catherine's William and the older Ross Henry are brothers and also the Robert from Tatamagouche.

The John Cooper that I found, single on the 1891 census I think is the one that was from Halifax and married Sarah Wilson.

Hi Val,

I'll need some time to digest all information posted.
One thing I was able to check up on was the link to the Cooper family tree, which looks like it may resolved the difficulty with my Johns and Williams'. I just e-mailed Allan Cooper in the UK. He shows Ross Henry as having a William and a Goerge as brothers and also a John as a brother of Ross Henry's father William.

Matilda Bent's father was Cyrus Bent, married to Elizabeth Mary Oxley.

Last fall while visiting Nova Scotia we spent time in Amherst at the registry office and the genealogical society and bought a number of books, as well we visited Pugwash and the historical society there, we also happened on the centre in Wallace (what a great place and extremely knowlageble curator, a real gem).

We took pictures of a lot of headstones, in River Hebert (the Wood Family), Springhill, Minudie and Pugwashincluding the one of Ross Henry Cooper in Pugwash. We do wonder though where Ann, his wife is buried and when she actually passed away.

Also taking pictures in September is not such a great idea, the millions of musquitos are waiting.

I do not know when the Coopers, this is Ros Henry Cooper and Ann arrived, but they got married on October 4, 1837 in Aberdeen and their first son, John Cooper, was born in Shinimicas on November 9, 1838. Do not know the port. Other Coopers may have arrived earlier.

Thanks,

Frans
